Credit card vs Direct Debit for business bills

Direct Debit lets the payee collect a bill from your bank account on dates it tells you in advance, and the Direct Debit Guarantee refunds errors. A credit card lets you pay now and clear the card later. Direct Debit collects from a bank or building society account, so to use a card you pay that bill another way.

Direct Debit and a credit card answer different questions. Direct Debit decides who starts the payment: the payee collects it. A credit card decides when the money leaves your bank account: later, when you pay the card bill.

How Direct Debit works

A Direct Debit is your instruction to your bank. It lets an organisation collect amounts from your account, as long as the organisation tells you the amounts and dates in advance. Businesses can pay bills this way, and not only households.

Three rules matter most:

  • Notice. If the amount, date or frequency changes, the organisation normally tells you 10 working days before it collects.
  • The Guarantee. If the organisation or your bank makes an error, your bank or building society gives you a full and immediate refund.
  • Your contract still stands. The Guarantee does not change what you owe under your contract with the payee. A refund for an error does not cancel the bill.

Direct Debit suits bills that repeat, when you want each one paid on time without any action from you. The trade-off is control. The payee sets the collection date, and the money leaves your bank account on that day.

How paying by credit card works

With a one-off card payment, you start each payment. The money comes from your card account, and you repay the card on its own statement cycle. If you do not pay the card balance in full, the card provider charges interest.

A card payment also has its own ways to put things right. A chargeback lets you challenge a card payment in some cases. Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act can cover credit card purchases with a cash price over £100 and up to £30,000. Ask your card provider whether these rules cover your card, especially a business card, and how they apply when a service pays the payee for you.

Paying a Direct Debit bill by card

Direct Debit collects from a bank or building society account. To put a bill on a card, you pay it another way:

  1. The payee takes cards. Pay the bill by card on the payee’s website or by phone.
  2. The payee takes bank transfers. A bill payment service such as dozo charges your card and pays the payee for you.

Before you switch, ask the payee for its bank details and the reference to use. You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time through your bank or building society. Tell the payee too, so that it expects your payment another way.

What a card payment costs through dozo

dozo prices, checked on 12 October 2026.

Bill Fee with a UK card on the £29 plan (2.5%) Fee with a UK card on the £79 plan (2.3%)
£500 £12.50 £11.50
£2,000 £50.00 £46.00

You also pay the plan: £29 or £79 a month, or £290 or £790 a year. dozo pays the payee on or after the payment-out date that you choose, once your card payment has reached dozo. The earliest date is 5 days after today, not counting bank holidays in England and Wales. So create each payment at least 5 working days before the bill is due. A Direct Debit needs none of these steps.

Which one fits which bill

  • A regular bill that you can pay from your bank account on the due date: Direct Debit is the simpler choice. You do nothing, and the Guarantee covers errors.
  • A large or irregular bill that arrives before your cash does: a card gives you time, for a fee. Compare the fee with what the delay is worth to you.
  • A bill with a strict deadline: check the timing of both routes. For example, HMRC collects a VAT Direct Debit 3 working days after the payment deadline. You must set it up at least 3 working days before you submit the VAT return. Through dozo, the earliest payment-out date is 5 days after you create the payment. The HMRC guide covers the details.
